When Did Black Friday Become a Thing in Ireland?

If you feel like Black Friday crept into Irish life without so much as a warning, you’re not alone. It wasn’t too long ago that we were blissfully unaware of this American tradition of consumer madness, where people queue at 5 a.m. for a TV they don’t need. But somewhere around 2013, Ireland decided it didn’t want to miss out on the chaos, and suddenly Black Friday was everywhere—except here, it starts on Monday and lasts a week because, you know, we’re all about efficiency.

Retailers like Amazon, Currys, and even Arnotts began flashing their massive pre-Christmas sales, and before you knew it, Irish shoppers were diving into deals faster than you could say “How much is 50% off again?” It’s as if we took the American frenzy and added our own twist—Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and even “Sure, it’s still Tuesday, the deals are grand” Day!

What started as a post-Thanksgiving tradition now sees Irish shops rolling out discounts long before you’ve even finished carving your Halloween pumpkin. And really, can you even start your Christmas shopping in peace without the soothing sound of a thousand other people fighting for the same set of wireless earbuds?

But in fairness, who’s complaining? These days, you can’t turn on your phone or step into a shopping centre without a Black Friday deal in your face, promising you savings on everything from tech to toasters. Plus, it’s a handy excuse to splurge just a little before December fully grips our wallets.

So, as Black Friday continues to grow in Ireland, take solace in the fact that we now have more sales, more time, and possibly more confusion about what day it actually begins. One thing’s for sure—if you thought Christmas was creeping in earlier and earlier, Black Friday is leading the charge, with festive cheer riding in its wake!

Shop smart and mark your calendars for our Black Friday deals at ForYou.ie. Who knows what treasures you’ll find without ever leaving the comfort of your pyjamas?
